G-Shock Light [Solved]: Why Does My G-Shock Light Keep Turning On?

It seems like every day I get a call from someone with a problem with their G Shock watch. Sometimes it’s just a minor issue where the battery needs replacing, but sometimes the problem is far more serious.

I’m sure you know how frustrating it can be to have your G Shock light turn on and off constantly. In fact, I’m sure you’ve even tried everything under the sun to fix it yourself without success.

If you’ve hit a brick wall trying to solve this problem, then read on for my solution. Hopefully, you won’t have to go through the same experience as me.

What’s G Shock’s Automatic light?

This is probably a fun hidden feature on some G Shock watches. Casio G Shocks with an EL back-light feature always come with an auto-illumination mode.

This mode works by automatically illuminating the watch display when you tilt your watch 15 degrees. This mode is different from the illumination you find in luminous watches.

Although it drains the battery more quickly, this feature makes it easier to read the time in any lighting condition. By using this feature, you don’t need to press a button to light up your G Shock display. You just tilt the watch and it illuminates.  

Why Does Your G Shock Light Keep Turning On?

If your G Shock back-light constantly turns on without you pressing a button, then that should be a problem you want to resolve. Below are a few reasons this happens and how to solve it.

A) You may have the auto-light function switched on.

When you’ve activated the auto-light function, tilting the watch to a certain degree automatically powers the watch’s EL back-light. So if you notice your watch’s light keeps turning on, check whether you’ve activated the auto-light feature.

How to solve this…

In order to deactivate the auto-light feature, hold down button B for a few seconds until you see the auto-light indicator on the display turn off. In some Casio G Shock models, the auto-light feature self-disables after six hours. So on these models, you have the option of waiting for six hours to elapse.

B) The Tilt Sensor is defective.

A tilt sensor is present on all Casio models that come with an auto-illumination feature. The tilt sensor’s function is to detect the position of the watch display. When this sensor is functioning properly, it reads the position of the watch face and automatically turns on the watch’s back-light when you tilt the display. 

How to access the tilt sensor

If the tilt sensor is malfunctioning, the watch’s auto-light feature may function abnormally. You can check if the tilt sensor works properly by launching the tilt sensor diagnostic mode. Here’s how to do it.

  • When timekeeping mode is on, press buttons A, B, and C simultaneously
  • It will display a TLT screen
  • When the sensor is functioning properly, the display will display ‘8888’.
  • You can return to the normal timekeeping mode by pressing any button

How to solve this…

To fix a malfunctioning tilt sensor on your watch, I recommend you visit a watch specialist. Alternatively, you could buy a new G Shock watch if your budget allows it. 

C) The Light Button is Malfunctioning.

A malfunctioning light button could be another reason the G Shock light keeps on turning on. G Shock watches normally require you to cycle through with a dedicated watch button to access auto-light mode. It is possible that your backlight may turn on automatically if this button is malfunctioning. 

How to solve this…

If you suspect the button may malfunction, it is best to take the watch to a watch specialist to have a thorough inspection done.
